The Kidney Transplant Process

When a kidney becomes available, you will be asked to report to Harper's Ambulatory Reception Center and then proceed to the nephrology/transplant floor for completion of final tests and evaluations.

You will be under general anesthesia throughout the surgery. During the surgery, the transplant surgeon will make an incision on the right or left side of the lower abdomen, the donor kidney will be placed into your abdomen and it will be connected to arteries, veins and the ureter. The surgery typically takes three to six hours. The number of days you spend here before going home will depend on your condition.
