A Letter from the DMC Huron
Valley-Sinai Hospital VP of Patient Care Services
I feel very privileged to be the Vice President of Patient Care
Services at DMC Huron Valley Sinai hospital (HVSH). When I joined HVSH in
2006, I was impressed by the sense of community and family that I felt
throughout the hospital. I left a chief nurse position of a 600+ bed facility to
come to a place where shared decision making and staff engagement is
evident. People work at HVSH because they want to; it isn’t just a
job. Everyone, regardless of their position, is part of a cohesive group
working together toward one goal: quality patient care. The sense of belonging
and the ability to see the importance of what each person does and how it
contributes to the overall patient experience is unbeatable.
I am very excited about the progressive and innovative things
occurring at this 153 bed hospital. Our affiliation with the Detroit
Medical Center and Wayne State University affords us the support of a large
organization for research and collaboration for programs such as from Children’s
Hospital of Michigan when we need specialist back up for our kids or from Harper
Hospital when we need 24 hour neuro surgeon support for our Stroke
patients. Yet we remain small enough where employees know and care about
each other. We are able to boast that we do not utilize outside agency
nurse staffing to meet our patients’ needs. In fact, our nursing vacancy
rate consistently runs below four percent, well below the national average.
In October 2007, we filed our application for Magnet
designation. The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the American
Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to recognize health care organizations that
provide nursing excellence. Magnet designation is an important acknowledgment of
nurses' worth, and a seal of approval of quality patient care. The Magnet
journey will further develop the “5 star” culture for which our patients have
come to know us. It will help us to continue to strengthen the shared
decision making environment that is so important to our nurses.
I invite
you to view the 2007 Nursing Annual Report to see some of the exciting things
taking place at HVSH.
Thank you for your interest in HVSH.
Respectfully;

Bette R. Fitz RN BSN, MBA CNAA Vice
