Volunteer Services

It takes special people to give freely of their valuable time and talents to help others. The people who volunteer at Harper-Hutzel Hospital are caring, dedicated and committed.

Through their many meaningful activities, our volunteers help further the objectives of the hospital and provide the best possible support and comfort for our patients, their families and visitors.

The Harper-Hutzel Guild in conjunction with the Volunteer Services Department is always looking for dedicated people to become a part of the team and make a difference. We have many volunteer opportunities available within the hospital including:

  • Visiting with new and long term patients:
Volunteers will visit patients daily to provide them with the hospital's patient handbook and any additional assistance.
  • Providing reading material for patients:
Volunteers help obtain donated magazines and distribute them to patients along with crossword puzzles and crafts. They provide a few moments of diversion and a listening ear to patients by sitting with them, reading, playing checkers or cards, etc.
  • Way-finding assistance for patients/visitors:
Volunteers help our patients and visitors navigate through our hospital to their destination with ease. Our facility is very large and can sometimes be challenging for patients and visitors to find their way.
  • Fundraising Sales:
Our volunteers assist the Harper-Hutzel Guild with fundraising sales held at the hospital, such as jewelry and purse sales, scrub sales, etc. These events raise funds for special projects and services at the hospital.
  • Hospital Events:
Volunteers assist during event days to help make them run smoothly and be successful. Events include Hospital Week activities, Red Cross Blood Drives, Health Fairs, etc.
  • Clerical Assistance:
Volunteers assist in various departments throughout the hospital, making reminder phone calls to patients, filing paperwork, preparing mailings or other clerical projects as needed.

While helping others, volunteers will make many new friends, learn new things and have fun!

Becoming a Volunteer
Because of the nature of care provided at DMC Harper-Hutzel Hospitals, all volunteers are carefully screened, processed and placed in appropriate assignments. This process includes the application and initial interview with the Volunteer Services Department, a medical clearance, reference checks, a Criminal Background Check and attending a volunteer orientation. In addition, those volunteers that are under the age of 18 will require parent/guardian consent (Click here to print a consent form). The process for becoming a volunteer does take time, but it is meant to ensure the safety of patients and families as well as the success of our volunteers.

If you have an interest in volunteering at our hospitals, please contact Harper-Hutzel Volunteer Services at 745-4922 or click here for a volunteer application.
