Pancreas Transplant Alone, or PTA, is done for recipients who have good kidney function and only require a pancreas transplant.
Facts About Pta Surgery
National success rates for PTA:
- 78% of patients are completely off insulin at one year
- 50% of patients are off insulin at three years
- The recipient's own pancreas is not removed during the transplant
- The incision is down the middle of the abdomen
- Pancreas is attached to the groin vessels on the right side of pelvis
- Duodenal cuff of the pancreas transplant is connected to the small intestine to drain the pancreatic juice
- Procedure takes approximately 4-5 hours (not including recovery time)
