There are some exceptions to these attempts to do away with steroids, because there are some pretransplant and posttransplant conditions that still require steroids for a successful outcome. People who have rejection episodes after transplantation or people who are on steroids before transplantation to treat the condition which caused their renal failure will usually require steroids to ensure a successful outcome. People are unique individuals, and their treatment after transplantation has to be individualized. Steroids are usually considered the "bad guys", but for some patients they are part of the rescue squad and make the difference between success or failure. The drugs used in transplantation are very powerful with many possible side-effects and drawbacks. This is why the transplant surgery is just the beginning. Success in the long run is a team effort, with the transplant recipient, the doctors, the nurses, the coordinators, the dietician, the pharmacist, and the social workers all working together.
