It was fully equipped with attractive furniture, pictures, china and linen, which was donated by Mrs. Edward Butler in honor of Isabel Flowers, Class of 1895. The Isabel Flowers Room was maintained for several years by the Alumnae Association, but by 1920 it was estimated the cost would be $45,000 for one year. In 1925, Grace McSweeney met with the Board of Trustees to discuss the future of assistance to sick nurses. Through donations, card parties and other social events a total of $13,000 was raised and invested with the Detroit Bank and Trust Co. These funds are still used for elderly nurses and sick nurses.
SALLY WEIR BROOKS FUND The Sally Weir Brooks Fund was established by the Alumni Association, resulting from a gift of $5,000 donated in 1945 by Dr. and Mrs. Clark Brooks. This was also for needy nurses. This money was also invested in securities with the Detroit Bank and Trust Company. This fund no longer exists.
LYSTRA E. GRETTER SCHOLARSHIP FUND This fund was established in 1920, and is used solely for education. In that
year, the American Nurses Association met in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Farrand
Training School Alumnae Association celebrated by having a banquet. Maude McClaskie,
one of our graduates, suggested a scholarship fund be set up for graduate nurses,
and that it be named in honor of Mrs. Lystra E. Gretter. A pledge of $300 was
presented at that meeting, to be used for nursing education. This money and
more was also invested in the Detroit Bank and Trust Company and has been used
for scholarships since that time. Mrs. Muriel Pearse was the first recipient
of a scholarship from these funds. Over the years, the Alumni Association has
dispersed thousands of dollars annually for further education of our graduates.
During peak years, it was not uncommon that scholarships totalled $25,000 to
$35,000 annually. In more recent years, scholarship money has averaged $3,000
to $4,000 annually. Copyright® 1998-2007 Detroit
