Diabetes Education
Meet Our Staff

Our staff consists of specially trained nurses and dietitians who work with people who have diabetes. Many are Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE) with years of experience.

Meet the Diabetes Education Team:


Barbara Freeland, APRN-BC, CDE
Manager

Earned her master’s degree in nursing from Madonna University and holds certifications as an advance practice nurse and diabetes educator. She has more than 30 years nursing experience and has published articles on diabetes in the American Journal of Nursing and The Diabetes Educator. She is the immediate past president of the Michigan Organization of Diabetes Educators and a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

Jodi Ann Micallef, MS, RD, CDE
Clinical Dietitian

Earned her bachelor’s degree in dietetics from Mercy College of Detroit and a master’s degree in health care education from the University of Detroit-Mercy. She has worked at the Detroit Medical Center since 1988. In 1998, she earned the credential of a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). Jodi Ann specializes in helping people with diabetes learn how to improve their health through healthy eating habits.

Cynthia Turner, RN, BSN
Diabetes Educator

Earned her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1998 and has been employed with the Detroit Medical Center since 1995. She’s currently practicing as a Diabetes Educator at Harper University Hospital’s Outpatient Diabetes Education Program.

Kathy Fellabaum, RD, MSW , CDE
Clinical Dietitian

Earned her bachelor of science in dietetics from Eastern Michigan University in 2001. She has worked as a renal dietitian and as an outpatient dietitian prior to coming to Harper University Hospital in 2005. She is a member of the Diabetes Care and Education practice group as well as the Weight Management practice group of the American Dietetic Association. Kathy also has a master’s degree in social work and worked for several years as a Clinical Social Worker and recently, she earned the credential of a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE).

Josie Hinojosa, AAS
Office Coordinator

Earned her associate of applied science and is currently working toward a Bachelor's in business degree. She has been with the outpatient Diabetes Education Program since it’s inception in 1999. She coordinates appointments and assists clients in communicating with insurance companies and physician office staff. Josie excels at customer service and is the first point of contact for those calling the education program.
