M. Mounir Gazayerli, M.D., D.S., FRCS
Dr. Gazayerli himself has the Lap-Band and has successfully lost weight with
the band so he knows what it feels like from a patient’s perspective!
At the age of 21 years old, Dr. Gazayerli obtained his M.D. Degree from
Alexandria University, Cairo, Egypt, and had eleven years of general, thoracic
and cardiovascular surgery residency training. During the beginning years of his
private practice, he was early to recognize the value of laparoscopic surgery.
Dr. Gazayerli is considered a pioneer of laparoscopic surgery. He developed
techniques and several surgical instruments for laparoscopic surgery for many
procedures that were once only done “open” and has performed surgeries on every
continent except Australia. He had performed one of the first – if not the very
first – laparoscopic splenectomy in the world.
His clinical interests include Lap Band and REALIZE adjustable gastric
band. Also, Dr. Gazayerli adapted many open surgical operations to the
laparoscopic approach such as inguinal hernia, hiatal hernia,
esophagogastroyplasty for esophageal stricture to name a few.
Dr. Gazayerli is board certified with the American Board of Surgery and is a
Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS). He is an active member
in several professional societies, including the Society of American
Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the Society of Laparoendoscopic
Surgeons, and honorary member of Asociacion Mexicana De Cirurgia Laparoscopica.
He has published several chapters on laparoscopic hiatal hernia, inguinal
hernia, and splenectomy in both in English and Spanish. Dr. Gazayerli is fluent
in the English, Arabic and French languages.
Philosophy: As long as surgeons are experienced in open surgery,
develop dexterity with laparoscopic instrumentation through extensive training
and know when to convert to open for the patient's safety – laparoscopic surgery
shall remain safe and benefit patients by minimizing pain and trauma and
speeding recovery.
Other Clinical Interests: Laparoscopic hiatal hernia, laparoscopic
esophageal surgery, laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, laparoscopic splenectomy,
and laparoscopic lysis of adhesion.
